Makapu'u, a goddess with eight bulging eyes, lived at the Southeastern point of Oahu according to Hawaiian legends. In 1909, Makapu'u Point Lighthouse was first illuminated and became another bright shining eye to guide ships through the Kaiwi Channel. I am in awe of light keeper Alexander Toomey's devotion to stand guard in guiding incoming mariners. Even in tragedy he said, "Stand by the light and keep it burning."
